Oscar Fashion Round Up with Julio

I like to think of the Oscars as the Super Bowl of fashion – where I’m at home with a full spread of food and my notes & scribbles of the season’s latest collections at the ready for references. Whereas some would yell at the screen over a football player fumbling a ball, I’m at home yelling at celebrities over their wardrobe blunders or poor taste in accessorizing a gown. This year’s Oscars were, to say the least, subtle and when it came to double takes or show-stopping gowns there weren’t that many. An array of neutrals of white, copper beiges and shimmering metallics took over the majority of the red carpet while the occasional pops of red and gunmetal grays provided a contrast against the soft colour palette.

When it came to stand out looks, there were a handful of screen favourites – beginning with Jennifer Lawrence. That dramatic strapless white Christian Dior gown. ‘It-girl’ of the moment or not the ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ star was a vision in the elaborate gown complete with cascading diamond back chain as her accessory. Hands down my best dressed.

Moving from one white vision to another, the South African beauty that is Charlize Theron had me floored. But not only with her crystallized peplum Dior number but her accessories AND hair – redefined modern pixie cut!

Rounding out my favourites is Salma Hayek. Now, I know some of you are going to argue this one, “Julio, she’s wearing a neckbrace.” But, hear me out – one it’s Alexander McQueen and two, that black velvet body of the dress did wonders for the petite Spanish actress. The embellished collar was quintessential McQueen flare and those that admire the late designer, admire him for thinking outside the box. Very avant garde.

I’ve never been a fan of the ‘worst dressed’ title because to be quite honest, most of the time they still look amazing but maybe just not AS amazing as other stars. So instead I’ll be dubbing it ‘Try Again Next Year.’ It’s seldom that I find Halle Berry less than ravishing but this time around I found her custom-made embellished Versace dress disappointing! Hey, we all make mistakes sooner or later and it you know what adds salt to the wound? Stacy Keibler basically wore the same thing and it’s what Halle’s dress SHOULD HAVE looked like!

But you know what was really frightening? That tulle addition of Octavia Spencer’s dress! What with the pearl detailing along her waste and the soft pastel colour – you might as well called her a cupcake! It’s ok Octavia; we’ll just call it a lapse in judgment, you’ll shine next time around.

You know who else had a lapse in judgment? Reese Witherspoon. When I first saw her come out in that Louis Vuitton gown I was so excited, and then the cameras zoomed in. I found dress’s neckline was cutting into Reese’s bust line and took away from her features. A brilliant colour against the red carpet but a different silhouette would have worked better for her.

We can’t forget the guys – who, as always deliver with their classic tuxedo and sartorial styles. Bradley Cooper set the bar with his exceptionally tailored black 3-piece suit; something we’re seeing more of in menswear.

Having a normally black motif when it comes to men’s suiting during the Oscars, it’s always refreshing seeing a different shade walk down the red carpet. Daniel Day-Lewis donned a navy suit contrasted with a satin shawl collared lapel – different and refreshing.

Jeremy Renner channeled the classic and traditional movie star in Givenchy, with the house’s exceptional silhouette and attention to detail. Trust me, if you see their pieces in person. It’ll. Blow. Your. Mind.
