Operation Beach Waves: A How-To

Operation Beach Waves: A How-To

We can officially declare that the tousled beach-wave is not another passing trend and is here to stay! This seemingly effortless chic hair actually takes some effort to create, unless you happen to have a massive body of saltwater in your backyard. But if you’re like the rest of us and occasionally run into some not-so-glamourous rain puddles, keep reading as we go over a few tips and tricks for every hair type!

Pin Straight Hair

First things first, you need to get your hands on some heat protection like Kiehl’s Heat-Protective Silk Straightening Cream for those beautiful straight strands. From there, split your hair into 2 sections, braid them and grab your flat iron. Clamp down on the braids multiple times, then undo the braids and spray some texturizing spray (John Frieda at Shoppers Drug Mart has a great selection) and finish it off with some light hairspray. If your hair is super straight then a flat iron might not do and you will need a curling iron instead, in which case you have to add the texturizing product first, and seal it with some hair spray.

Naturally Wavy Hair

For all you ladies with naturally wavy hair, you can get the look with a little less effort than those with straight or curly hair! If you want tousled waves straight out of the shower then apply a curl cream and let dry in a loose bun. A great product for wavy hair is the new Bumble and Bumble’s Don’t Blow It hair styler. Quick tip, add this when your hair is a little more dry than wet and make sure not to run your fingers through your hair so much. If you don’t want to add product as soon as your out of the shower, let it dry and the next day just add a little textured spray while curling the pieces that could use a little help.

Curly Hair

Curls are gorgeous, but every now and then we all like to change it up a little bit. Avoid the heat that your hair endures while getting straightened by relaxing those tresses into soft beachy waves – it’s super easy! First, wash and condition before bed, and towel dry it by gently pressing and squeezing your hair to absorb the water. Then brush through it and apply a heavy oil like the Kerastase Oleo-Relax. Next divide the hair in 2 sections, loosely braid each section while keeping the top as smooth as possible. Once secured, pull on the braids to make it wide and loose and pin them on top of your head like a headband (this prevents frizzing while you sleep). The braids will dry your hair into waves rather than the usual curls. When you wake, take them down (they’ll be 90% dry at this point), shake it out and spray with a texturizing spray like Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Infusion which can be found at Sephora.

Lastly, (this applies to all hair types) make sure not to touch your hair so much! This causes the waves to completely fall or will create frizz, let it do it’s own thing and if need be, touch up the single pieces with a curling rod or some spray. Here’s to fab beachy waves like Taylor Schilling, Vanessa Hudgens and all other hair inspiring ladies found on tumblr and pinterest!
