Revival of the Seventies

05.15.15

Zeina Esmail, FASHION Magazine’s Fashion Editor-at-Large, Page One Management’s Fashion Stylist and CAFA Stylist of the Year, is sharing her favourite seventies runway trends and where you can get a similar piece at Yorkdale!

The 1970s was undoubtedly the biggest and most influential trend that dominated the Spring 2015 runways. From Studio 54 to The luxe Hippychick, this is clearly the decade of choice amongst the designers and fashionistas of the world. Whether the wide leg culotte or the suede fringe vest, the obvious inspiration for this season comes from people like Bianca Jagger and Farrah Fawcett as well as the influences of Glastonbury, native Navaho and the urban cowgirl.

Kissed with a taste of English femininity this little frock brings a 70s  kick to a softer, sweeter style dress with bold embroidery; either in accents or more prominently throughout. Often as a mini but also shown in midi and maxi lengths on several Spring runways.

Summer suede is the new skin of Spring. Designers are no longer afraid to pair leather and suede with more traditional spring fabrics to create a unique juxtaposition. The tunic is a simple silhouette that looks fab with anything from a bell bottom to shorts and a gladiator. What’s even more amazing is that this piece can beautifully transition into other seasons.

The most coveted pant this season is undoubtedly the culotte. This reinvented silhouette can be found grazing any part of the leg between the knee and ankle and should be on every girls hit list for Spring. Looks great with a billowy blouse half tucked, a long necklace and/or oversized sunglasses

Not necessarily the safest option but definitely a shape for making a statement. These round retro-esque frames are the coolest and most relevant sunglass style to have for the season.

Whether low-slung or in clutch form, the fringe bag is the ‘it’ accessory to complete any outfit and can transform an otherwise simple look into something chic and super stylish.

Can be classified as ‘the’ dress to have amongst your summer staples the white peasant dress is a simple and modern piece that embodies the 70s vibe in a simple yet obvious way.

Denim was another major trend splashed on every Spring runway however this time it was redefined in new and unexpected ways. It’s farewell to a fabric that has forever been affiliated with the uniform of all mankind-the basic blue jean. In fact, some of the seasons best pieces have fresh new facelift in denim (some even head-to-toe).

A dominant force in footwear this Grecian inspired sandal screams ‘I am sexy’ and is a Spring’s hottest way of dressing your feet. The Gladiator boot is by far the most glamorous of the mix and encompasses the boho trend in the most sexiest of ways.

The fringe vest is one that shows face every couple of seasons and has evolved into a stylish summer staple. Most often seen in the traditional brown suede version this western inspired classic has cemented it’s position amongst the bohemian bourgeois and is undeniably ‘the’ essential of any trendy hippychick.
