Styled By Nelia: Dressing for the Holidays!

Knowing that holiday shopping can get a little overwhelming, a couple of weeks ago I went to Yorkdale to offer my help to one lucky shopper and have my friend (and videographer) Max Kopanygin film it. We bumped into Kirsten who was searching for a perfect holiday party outfit, and who was really excited to participate in our little video.

After asking Kirsten a few questions about her personal style and preferences, off to H&M we went! I just knew that I could find something amazing for this stylish young woman at one of my most favourite Yorkdale retailers. And boy, was I right! After a quick jaunt through the store, I had not one, not two, not even three outfits ready for Kirsten to try on…but a whopping four looks perfect for the holidays.

There was an elegant burgundy striped crop top and skirt combo, that we spiced up with a sparkly bib necklace, a “very Kate Moss” silver bodycon dress paired with a shaggy sweater-coat, and a fab printed Isabel Marant for H&M dress that was begging to be taken somewhere fancy. But the one outfit that made me exclaim “THAT’S THE ONE!” was an unexpected mix of printed blue brocade pants, black velvet blazer, paired with a simple white button-up that was adorned with a black feather necklace. The proportions of the cropped blazer and long pants on petite Kristen made her look taller and the unexpected mix of textures (brocade, feathers, velvet, oh my!) thrown together ended up striking the perfect balance between festive and elegant.

But we weren’t done with Kirsten just yet! To help complete her holiday party look, Vince and Natasha from the Donato Salon and Spa stopped by the store to treat Kirsten to a quick hair and makeup touch-up, giving her a trim and glamming her up with a bright lip. Holiday party look accomplished! Check out the video below to see Kirsten’s shopping experience!

If you are still in need of a last-minute holiday party outfit, here are a some tips that may help you in your search:

Go for the unexpected!
Sparkly and red are tried and true classics when it comes to the holiday season, but sometimes it’s fun to think outside the box. Instead of sequins, why not try adding velvet to your outfit? Velvet adds rich texture to any look while still looking festive. Or instead of yet another cocktail dress, it might be fun to put on a pair of dressy pants for a menswear twist on holiday dressing. Add a bow or a fun necklace, and you’re all set!

Try it on!
If you see it on the shelf/hanger and find it interesting/cute/cool, but don’t think you can pull it off…just go for it! Grab it, try it on, twirl in front of the mirror… and you may just surprise yourself. We all have our comfort zones, but sometimes it’s fun to shake it up and try something different. Sequined leggings? Loud printed shirt? Voluminous neoprene skirt? Could they work on you? You’ll never know until you try them on!

Add fun details!
Accoutrements are just as important as the outfit itself, so choose wisely. Wearing an LBD? Add a statement necklace! A conservative pair of pants? Dress them up with a pair of fun shoes. Any outfit can be rescued with a few strategically chosen accessories. And what better time to go all out than during the holidays?
