Celebrate A Safe and Fun-Filled Thanksgiving

Celebrate A Safe and Fun-Filled Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving gives us the chance to gather with friends and family and celebrate over a delicious meal. Like all things this year, 2020 has altered many of our annual plans or traditions. We likely won’t be traveling far to visit loved ones or enjoying big gatherings, but that doesn’t mean all Thanksgiving rituals need to be ruled out. Despite social restrictions, it’s possible to make the most out of the holiday and carve out new traditions.

You can still have a fun and memorable holiday with social distancing rules in place. Here are a few fun ideas on how to make it happen.

Spice Up Your Thanksgiving

Plan the menu

A Thanksgiving menu can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like. For many, turkey will be the star, but delicious sides deserve just as much love. Let seasonal vegetables shine like beets, parsnips and brussel sprouts. And don’t forget about dessert – a scrumptious pumpkin pie or an apple galette topped with vanilla ice cream is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Once you’ve sorted out the menu, make your grocery list and shop ahead of time. As it gets closer to the big day, start your prep work in advance so you’re not stressed or overwhelmed on Thanksgiving Day.

If grocery shopping and cooking isn’t your idea of a restful holiday weekend, JOEY Restaurant has you covered. Their award-winning chefs have created a Thanksgiving feast with all of your favourite fall flavours like cranberry sauce with orange zest and caramelized apple and sage stuffing, plus optional add-ons. Including prime rib and Sommelier recommended wine pairings. Get your pre-orders online by October 4 to schedule pick-up October 9-12. Click here for more info and to place your order today.

We also have a variety of restaurants open on Thanksgiving weekend for takeout and delivery, including Thanksgiving Monday. Click here for a list of restaurants and their respective hours.

Set the table

The fun isn’t just in serving up a delicious meal, it’s also in setting up the decor. Whether you love a rustic theme or glam, you can get your table ready with a few flourishes. Up the table with decorative gourds, which work as a centerpiece or a table runner, or bring out your best serveware. You can even involve the kids by enlisting them to make place cards. If you prefer to keep the decor simple, place flowers in a vase as your centerpiece, choosing autumnal hues to set the mood.

Liven up your front porch

You can also show your outdoor space some love with a bit of festive fun. Decorate your front porch with pumpkins, which you can either carve or paint to personalize. Other ideas include putting up some string lights or swapping your welcome mat for a seasonal one. If you live in an apartment, you can still join in on the fall festivities by adorning your door with a seasonal wreath.

Pass The Plate

Thanksgiving is also a great time to show your gratitude outside the home and help those who might not be as fortunate as you. Food insecurity in Canada is at an all-time high due to the pandemic, and we have the opportunity to come together to make a difference. In the spirit of Thanksgiving and with the holidays quickly approaching, Oxford Properties is on a mission to raise 350,000 meals for Food Banks Canada. Starting October 1st, for every Instagram or Facebook post you share of yourself passing a plate with the hashtag, #PassThePlate2020, we will donate $5. One single post will feed 10 meals for hungry Canadians.

It’s easy to contribute! Starting Oct. 1st – Dec 31st:

  1. On Instagram/Facebook, post a pic or video of yourself passing a plate with the hashtag #PassThePlate2020
  2. Tag and challenge your friends to do the same.

Give a Thoughtful Gift

Another way to give thanks is to share a token of appreciation. Send one of our newly launched eGift Cards as a group. We make it easy to invite friends, family and colleagues to contribute together. Perhaps you want to thank a teacher who has been a huge support during this school year, or a loved one going through a hard time.

Savour The Fall Season

Thanksgiving also means that fall is in full swing. Embrace the season to its fullest with these cozy picks.

Sweater weather is the ideal time to bring out the candles. Seek out scents that bring the outdoors inside with earthy notes like cedar and firewood. Or, go for a candle that conjures up fall’s most delicious flavours like pumpkin spice, cinnamon and vanilla.

Fall is also the perfect time to take stock of your skincare routine and make the necessary switches. That might mean swapping your lightweight moisturizer for a thicker one or adding a rich body butter into the rotation.

Spending more time indoors? Cozy throws are essential for creating the perfect hygge setting.

Curbside Pickup & Delivery

Shoppers can pickup their online or telephone orders curbside from participating retailers. Once your order has been placed, a representative from the store will provide you with your designated pickup locations. For a list of participating retailers, click here.

However you spend Thanksgiving this year, remember that even in the most extraordinary circumstances, the holiday is all about good food, good company (whether in real life or virtual!), and celebrating what we’re grateful for, not just this day, but all year long.
