Our newest campaign model Barbara Fialho was only 15 years old when she moved from her hometown of Montes Claros, Brazil and found herself in the heart of the fashion world. By the age of 17 she was posing for fashion icons such as Roberto Cavalii and being dressed by Carine Roitfeld. Barbara has walked runways for names such as Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Victoria’s Secret and Alexander McQueen, to name a few. However, the talents of Barbara do not stop at the end of the runway; she has a blossoming music career to add to her roster. Since the ripe age of 9, Barbara has been submerged in music, mastering the guitar in her youth. In the past four years, she has attended Juilliard, studying music. Her single, Samba e Amor featuring Seu Jorge was released in 2017 and is available on iTunes and Spotify. We are thrilled to have such a talented woman represent Yorkdale in our newest campaign.
How long have you been modeling?
I have been modeling for 15 years now.
How did you get into modeling?
I was scouted out of school in my hometown of Montes Claros, Brazil when I was 14 years old. Three months later I was living in New York. It happened super fast! The recruiter walked up to me and said that I was beautiful and I was like “what?!” This was hard for me to believe because in high school (at the young age of 14), I was already 6 feet tall so I didn’t feel beautiful. So when he said that, all I could think was: “what planet are you from?” This recruiter helped shape my modeling career because he was a teacher for a modeling course as he was traveling around trying to scout models. He taught me how to walk as a model and I still use some of his tricks to this day.
What is one highlight of your career?
Last year I shot with Steven Meisel for the first Italy Vogue, and that was really emotional for me because I love Steven, and I had a blast working with him. During the shoot, he blasted Brazilian music for me and I loved it, I cried because it reminded me of home. Another highlight of my career is when I went to China for the Victoria Secret Fashion Show and I got to wear the white swan outfit. My family used to joke and tell me that “one day you’ll be a swan!” because I was kind of shy and too tall. It was a big moment for me.
What’s your daily routine when you’re not working?
There is no routine. Each day is different. I’m also a musician so when I’m free, I’m usually either sleeping, working out or making music.
What do you do you to work out?
I do yoga, I run, I lift weights, I swim. Because maintaining my body is such a big part of what I do, I need to do something different or else it gets really boring for me. But lately I’ve become obsessed with yoga.
What’s your favourite thing about Toronto?
My favourite thing is the people. I am blown away, everyone is so cool. I need a Canadian husband!
What’s a staple in your wardrobe?
My leather jacket.
Tell us about your music!
I’ve been singing and playing the guitar since I was 9 years old. I love jazz, bossa nova and samba. I recently met a producer that has helped me bring together all the sounds that I love into a sound that is more contemporary. I think my music will really translate with the younger generation.
