Yorkdale is proud to announce a year-long partnership with The Remix Project, celebrating 20 years of empowering talented youth who face barriers pursuing careers within the creative industries. This collaboration features 14 striking banner images created by Black alumni from The Remix Project’s photography program. These powerful images celebrate themes of identity, joy, self-love, and style, serving as a tribute to the beauty of self-expression, creativity, and community.

“As a Black artist, my work is deeply influenced by my identity and lived experiences. Through my work, I aim to highlight the beauty and complexity of Blackness, honoring both individuality and shared experiences. Portrait photography enables me to capture raw emotion and authenticity, helping create intimate connections between the subject and the viewer.”
“I hope my art contributes to celebrating and recognizing Black creativity. I want my work to inspire and empower other Black artists to embrace their creativity without limitations. By documenting our narratives with care and intention, I hope to create a lasting visual archive that honors Black expression and challenges the way our stories are told and perceived.”
“My identity as a Black artist profoundly shapes every facet of my creative practice. I approach my work with the intention of serving my community, aiming to help others see themselves as beautiful, joyous, and multidimensional individuals. I see my creative journey as a continuation of the work of those who came before me, carrying their stories and resilience forward through my art. Richard Ashman lives and works on the traditional territory of many first nations (Tkaronto). His work reimagines subtleties of common experience though lens based mediums.

Indica (they/them) is a Toronto-based artist and creative specializing in portrait and event photography, as well as creative direction. With 6 years of experience, they approach projects with passion and intention, collaborating with clients like Sprite, Adidas, Nike, Live Nation and Wealthsimple. After completing The Remix Project Round 18.0 and receiving the Make It Happen award, they continue to evolve their creative journey through community-focused work.
“Oftentimes as a black artist/creator, I’ve had to work with people who did not take me seriously until my work proved that I could be taken seriously despite my prior knowledge and skill. I’ve also experienced being a diversity hire, or being the only black person on the team. This concept was new to me in the professional-creative world, and has since caused me to strive for creating space on my own platform where other black people can shine.”
Shanice Edwards (VISUALSBYSHAN) is a young Black multidisciplinary photographer specializing in portraiture. Her work blends diverse styles to capture human emotion and identity, exploring cultural narratives and personal connections with a keen eye for detail and intuitive approach.
“Through portraiture, I capture the richness of Black experiences, which focusses on both the individuality and the shared narrative within the Black community. My images highlight beauty, strength, vulnerability, resilience and versatility that is very often overlooked in mainstream representations of Black people.”
Antonio Berhan is a photographer and filmmaker who uses both analog and digital mediums to capture the depth of human experience. His work spans portraits, culture, community, and basketball photography, focusing on storytelling that highlights emotion, connection, and authenticity. Inspired by music, Antonio infuses rhythm and feeling into his visuals, aiming to inspire positive change and create impactful, conversation-starting imagery.
“I dream that my art can inspire others, especially those from my heritage, to embrace their creativity and make an impact on art both within and beyond our culture. Coming from the resilient country of Eritrea, I want my work to truthfully celebrate, positively recognize, and empower the people who have shaped me. Through my photography, I aim to capture the beauty, resilience, and complexity of Black and African identity, showcasing moments of joy, struggle, and everyday life that challenge stereotypes. I want my art to represent me wherever I go, serving as a testament to my roots and my journey. Ultimately, I hope my work outlives me, helping elevate Black and African art to the top of the mountain it truly deserves, recognized for its rich history, culture, and creative power.”
